I am such a frustrated artist. I just love to stare at wonderful artworks, normally sketches, cartoon drawings or anything that is drawn artistically. I envy those who were bestowed with talented hands where in they could express anything and everything they wanted through illustrations. It got me thinking… can being artistic and being able to produce good artwork be taught?

When my sister and I were growing up, my mom enrolled my sister on a charcoal drawing class. Looking back, I remember that my mom enrolled her in a ballet class too. I really don’t know and to this point, I am still wondering where I was in the picture. My older sister and I only had a 1-year gap and I was wondering now why my mom never bothered enrolling me on any of those summer classes. Now I’m sad to have remembered this…

Well, anyway, to continue… I remember my sister being taught how to draw eyes, then noses and then lips using charcoal. She had different sizes of brushes available to produce nice results. She can actually draw wonderfully. What I did was everytime she arrives home, she’d show me what they drew in class and I would mimic or copy the drawing trying to recreate my own piece of artwork. I was pretty good at it too. Well, not really that good…but I understand the process of how it was drawn.

I guess this could be one reason why I tend to mimic on other people’s creations. Because of how I was reared back when I was a kid, I think that influenced me not to have my own individuality..wherein I would rely on others for my ideas or decisions. It’s like I’m living behind my sister’s shadow. She was the more outgoing type and very sociable whereas I just stay behind the curtains. Well, I don’t also believe that that’s entirely the case. Normally what I do is check out on some designs online or wherever and try to check if I can copy them and if not, I’ll recreate my own design out of the concept I was trying to copy.

So going back to the question.. Can art be taught? Like cosmetology, can it really be taugth? Born without any artistic side in me, will I be able to come up with cartoon sketches or any drawings without copying it from somewhere? I wish I could learn how to draw well. I just wish I can.
